About Gillham Lake

The calm waters of Gillham Lake, surrounded by mountains and enchanting forests, bring peace and quiet to visitors. Although not originally created as a recreational lake, it is known as Cossatot's Bright Spot due to its proximity to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and entertains visitors to the lake with a variety of activities including fishing, swimming, boating, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, camping, fishing and more.

Gillham Reservoir is located in Howard and Polk counties and was created by the construction of Gillham Dam. The project was approved by the Flood Protection Act in 1958 and the dam was completed in 1972. Today it is owned and maintained by engineers from the US Army Corps and serves as a reservoir for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The Cossatot River is a major kayaking attraction and brings visitors to the area around Gillham Lake, also known as the Ouachita Mountains. With the name of the river from the Indian, where "Coss atot" means "skull breaker" "It is no wonder that this river is considered one of the most scenic and scenic rivers in America in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The Cossatot River is not recommended for beginners, but those who want to enjoy the beauty of the river on foot will enjoy its natural beauty and the forest that surrounds it.
