About Cherry Creek Reservoir

Cherry Creek Lake State Park, affectionately known as Denver's backyard, offers recreational opportunities for families from around the world. The lake is located in Cherry Creek County, Colorado, north of Denver, in the Rockies of Colorado.

With over 800 hectares of water and nearly 4,000 hectares of land, Cherry Creek has something for everyone, with a wide range of activities for all ages.

The Cherry Creek Dam was built to protect Denver and stop flooding that has persisted for more than 100 years. The South Platte River is built and the dam drains water from Cherry Creek and its tributaries. It is the first in a series of dams that form the Cherry Creeks Lake Reservoir. Construction of the dam began in 1948 and by the 1950s Cherry Creek Lake had reached its full basin.

Fishing is very popular on the lake, especially at weekends, and its location makes it a popular destination in the city for fishermen.

In the winter months, the lake is a great place for ice fishing, and fishermen can also catch catfish, cappie and stocked trout. State - Certified whales can be caught here, making it one of the state's most popular fishing destinations.

In the fully serviced marina, boaters will find everything they need and there is a rental service. Jet skiing and water skiing are popular on the lake, but visitors can also swim in the designated bathing area, as well as in one of the many swimming pools.
The lake and surrounding parks are managed by the Colorado Division of Wildlife, which maintains 35 miles of busy roads, 12 of which are paved. The trails can be used for hiking, cycling and horse riding, and there are stables for food and rental.

Nature lovers can wander through the natural prairie of Cherry Creek to roam the rolling hills for birds and bird watching. Red-tailed hawks, red-eyed owls, black-eyed ducks and the blue heron are all native to Cherry Creek and Lake.

Families can camp at one of the campgrounds in the park, and if Cherry Creek were your backyard, it would do the same.

Visitors can pass the time watching model aircraft take off and land on the park's paved runways or having fun on the shooting range. The fun is not limited to the summer months, and when the lake freezes over, there is even a winter campsite for ice fishing. In winter the park is open to everyone, but there are even winter campsites and ice rinks - fishing in spring and autumn, and summer campsites for summer campers.

It is no wonder that Cherry Creek Lake was chosen by Pope John Paul II in 1993 as the location for World Youth Day. What does Denver have to offer and what do you have to offer in Denver, Colorado?
