About Horsetooth Reservoir

Horsetooth Reservoir is designed to delight visitors, refresh the senses and provide beautiful views of the Colorado River and the Rocky Mountains. The water is almost exclusively obtained from the diversions of the western slope and provides all the fresh water needed for irrigation and secondary water supply.

Recovery is a side effect of a system developed by engineers to capture melting snow and transport it to the dry eastern slope.

The four dams, including the Horsetooth Reservoir and the Poudre River diversion dam on the western slope, enclose the basin and allow water to be extracted for local needs. Excess water is channelled north into the Poudres River and ensures that all possible water levels are fed along the route.

Millions of visitors come here every year for fishing, boating and swimming, but here at Horsetooth Lake recreation is a far cry from what the great reservoir is usually known for.

In the case of the wide use of water, several authorities are involved in water control and jointly ensure that all needs are met. Larimer County, home to Fort Collins, is responsible for ensuring water sports.

The small bay of Horsetooth Reservoir is ideal for swimming, kayaking, canoeing and picnicking, and is also a popular fishing spot.

There is no wakeboarding area, but most of the reservoir is open for wakeboarders and other water sports as well as kayakers. Water levels vary and in dry years there is no start, so there are no wakeboards in the area.

Bicycles are offered at several points along the coast, some of which are popular bouldering locations. Boat camping is possible in designated areas, and bike rental is available in the parking lot of the Horsetooth Reservoir and on the beach.

The lake is primarily used for cool, cold fishing due to the extreme water depth, but there are channels to protect the waterlines.

Fishermen can also target the horse - a toothed reservoir for deep sea fishing in the winter months. Rescuers are watching closely for mysterious mercury threats, especially under the eyes of Walliye. This happened in several Colorado reservoirs at the same time, and further studies have provided evidence of a source of contamination that is not normally considered a source of contamination by science.

Visitors to Horsetooth Reservoir will find other famous vantage points nearby, and adventurous visitors can enjoy some of the many scenic views from the top of Walliye Mountain, the highest mountain in Colorado. It takes days for many visitors to make the 2.2 km drive to the reservoir, but it is worth the drive.

Rocky Mountain National Park is only 60 miles away for a day trip, so be sure to pack a camera, and for day trips, Rocky Mountain National Park is only about 60 miles away.

Visitors should be aware that many of the trails are steep and somewhat challenging and unexpected bad weather and getting lost can be extremely dangerous. This area is a popular destination for hiking, mountain biking and motorised trails, but visitors should be warned that some areas are not suitable for motorised trails due to the altitude, strong wind and poor visibility.

The 25-mile shoreline of the lake is limited to real estate and private construction projects, but visitors can find many beautiful vacation rentals and condominiums overlooking the water. There is a concession port on the West Bank, but some places are far from the public and visitors are advised to get a detailed map of the area before embarking on an adventure in America's most beautiful wilderness.

The Horsetooth Reservoir is named after a nearby rock formation that is also depicted in the Fort Collins City logo. Additional accommodation is available at Lakeview Resort and Spa on the west shore of the lake, as well as a number of other hotels and cottages on the shore.

Although visitors are unlikely to experience a rainy day, even the smartest outdoor man will yearn for more civilian activities.

After repairs and modernisation, the Horsetooth Reservoir was reduced by 7% in 2002, but the water level is now almost full again.
