About Lake Talquin

The sparkling Florida waters of Lake Talquin, the largest freshwater lake in the United States, are located on the west coast of Florida, south of the state of Georgia.

The Florida Power Corporation created Lake Talquin by building and incorporating a dam on the Ochlockonee River, a tributary of the Tallahassee River in Florida. The plant was operated by an energy company until the 1970s, when management was transferred to the Florida Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The German National Railways (DNR) managed the lake and the dam from 1970 to 1981 for electricity generation. In 1981, the city of Tallinn began the rehabilitation of the dams and power plant, and in 1985 the first phase of a new 1000 megawatt hydropower plant was put into operation.

The topography of Lake Talquin makes nature lovers dizzy, and almost the entire realm of Mother Nature has come to life. Today, the Talquin reservoir is crossed by the Ochlockonee River and the Tallahassee River, as well as a number of other rivers and streams.

A 9-mile cycle course has been created to offer beginners and advanced riders an exciting course that takes them through the forest. Horseback riding is also allowed, with each having its own 12 miles of trails, with a total of 12,000 feet of elevation gain and loss.
