About Lake Burton

Lake Burton is a lake managed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFS).

It is located deep in the Appalachian Valley and offers scenic views of the Appalachian Mountains and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is heavily frequented as it is located near the capital Atlanta, Georgia, and bears the name Burton, after its founder John Burton. There are around 1200 residential buildings around Lake Burton, and the civic association helps to steer the development.

Lake Burton is one of five hydroelectric power plants owned by Burton Power Company, a private company founded in the early 19th century to generate electricity. The company's electricity generation is now largely used for peak loads, but is still a popular destination for tourists and locals.

Lake Burton is the largest of the five reservoirs and was created by the construction of a dam on the Chattahoochee River in the early 19th century. The dam is a heavy concrete dam, and water storage for the surrounding communities is an important function today. This power plant was the first of five hydroelectric power plants in Georgia to come into operation in 1884, along with three other dams.

At that time, the dam was considered a major technical achievement and was entered in the National Register of Engineers.

During Burton's history, two hydroelectric generators each produced 6,120 kilowatts, a record for a power plant in Georgia.

Lake Burton is a great fishing area, and the coast is maintained by Georgia Power during periods of prolonged drought. The best fishing opportunities are for brown trout, which are located in the upper and lower part of the lake, in the northern and southern part.

The current recording state has a bass weighing 8 lbs. With a maximum weight of 6.5 lb. and brown trout with an average size of 4.7 lbs, and a total weight in the range of 7 - 8 lb, with some perch up to 10 lbs and some trout up to 12 lbs!

Boat fishing is great and a number of places offer excellent fishing on land and boat and jet ski rentals are available. Besides fishing, there are a variety of other activities such as kayaking, canoeing, kayaking and canoeing, and lake fishing.

Timpson Cove Park is a great location for kayaking, canoeing, fishing and other activities on Lake Burton. The park is located on the west side of the lake, south of Lake Burton and north of Timpson Park.

The Moccasin Creek State Park offers visitors excellent opportunities for camping and hiking. Access to the park is on the west side of Lake Burton, south of Timpson Park and north of Murray Cove Park. Georgia Power offers a boat ramp and parking to and from the north and south sides of Lake Burton. In winter, the Murray Cove Boat Ramp is the only public boat moored in the southeast at Lake Burton and located on Bridge Creek Road. Charlie Mountain Road, located at the southern end of Moccasin Creek Park, south and east of Charlie's Mountain Drive and west of Billingsley Drive.
