About High Falls Lake

High Falls Lake is a beautiful 650-acre lake hidden in the mountains of Georgia, USA, just outside Atlanta, Georgia. Located between the cities of Macon and Atlanta, High Falls State Park offers unique rocky terrain and is one of the most popular hiking and camping destinations in Georgia and the nation. The most famous feature of Highfall Lake and many other waterfalls in Atlanta is the stunning rock waterfall created by the Towaliga River as it pours over the steep banks of a riverbed. At the beginning of the 19th century, two small dams were built at the Towaligia waterfall, supplying farmers with energy to grind wheat and maize.

When a major railroad bypassed the area, High Falls became a ghost town and industry disappeared. Saw mills and garbage mills followed, turning the area into a thriving industrial city. At the turn of the century, the Towaligia Falls Power Company built the largest single dam in the TowaF Falls and thus a large amount of water. The resulting flooding created Highfalls Lake, and this industry, along with a number of other industries, disappeared in the early 20th century.

In 1905, the Georgia Hydro-Electric Company bought the dam and power plant and put them into operation. In the 1930s, this property was transferred to the Georgia Power Company, which later closed the plant and sold the land to a timber company. The land and lands were eventually donated to the Georgia Game and Fish Commission, which handed them over to the State Parks Department.

The crystal clear water is also home to catfish, striped bass and many other fish species. Blue weed, robins, mussels and crabs are also abundant in the lowlands, and the lake is considered one of the best places in Georgia for fishing and boating in this part of Georgia.

A hybrid striped bass was stored in the lake in 2006, but since then only stripper stockings have supported the state's efforts to bring the native striped bass back into the watershed.

The large fishing pier on the lake is a great way to introduce children to fishing, and also a popular destination for children of all ages. Although most fish in Georgian lakes and streams are safe to eat, please read the Georgian consumption guidelines (link below) before eating fish that originates from Georgian waters.

Horsepower is limited to 10 hp, which makes the calm surface of the lake a paradise for paddlers. The lake is a great place for kayaking, canoeing, fishing and other outdoor activities as well as swimming.

Swimming in the lake or river is not allowed, but there is a large pool for visitors who want to refresh themselves. Other amusement parks include High Falls Park, the Grand Canyon of the Americas and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Vacation rentals and properties are available in and around the small town of High Falls Lake. Hotels, restaurants, hotels, golf courses and other accommodation options are available as well as a variety of other attractions.

A 4.5 km hiking trail leads through the lush forest surrounding High Falls Lake. One of the park's biggest attractions is the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a 1,500-acre park with 4,000 acres of parkland.

Many paths lead to the various dam ruins from the 19th century, and history buffs can make their way to an old water mill.
There are also several river views that offer panoramic views of the waterfalls, and additional outdoor recreational opportunities are available. High Falls Lake is considered the oldest national park in the country and was acquired by the state of Georgia in 1825. It was officially declared a state forest park in 1927, but is now considered a national park under the direction of the US Forest Service.

In the early 20th century, a new coal-fired power plant was built at High Falls Lake to supply water to the area's coal-fired power plants.

The observation deck offers the opportunity to observe the progress of this project, as well as a view of the Great Blue Heron and other birds of prey.

Lake Sinclair is located in the forest and offers a beautiful view of the Great Blue Heron and other birds of prey.
