About Cave Run Lake

Cave Run Lake, located in the Eastern Highlands region of Kentucky, is an artificially created reservoir on the banks of Cave Run Creek. Originally built in 1973 by the US Army Corps of Engineers for flood control, the lake is now a popular holiday destination.

Cave Run Lake is a neighbor of the Daniel Boone National Forest in the Eastern Highlands region of Kentucky, USA. The national forest, founded in 1937, covers an area of 2.2 million hectares and is home to more than 1,000 plant and animal species as well as a variety of wildlife.

Visitors to the lake owe it to themselves to visit the forest, and nature lovers will feel like visitors from all over the world in paradise.

One of the best activities on the lake is fishing, nicknamed "Muskie Capital of the South." Known for its record hunt for the world's largest black bass and its legendary record hunt for bluefish, this lake also hosts perch, catfish and cappies on its glittering surface. The Daniel Boone National Forest offers visitors a number of developed campsites, such as the Cave Run Campground, which allows you to access Cave Run Lake from various locations in the forest and from the city of Louisville, Kentucky. It is planted with tall deciduous forests, bubbling streams and a wide range of bird and mammal species.

Whether you take your own boat to the lake or rent one at the local marina, the fish at Cave Run Lake like to bite. Forget your fishing gear, boat or even kayak and get ready for your next big catch.

The lake offers visitors spectacular Kentucky landscapes all year round - but because it's south, it has to be kept quiet. Throughout spring and summer, Cave Run Lake is surrounded by flowering trees. When the snow falls and the region is wrapped in a blanket of purity, winter brings an unspoiled white landscape.

Swimmers dive deep under the surface of the lake and sometimes take snorkeling and diving equipment with them to explore what lies beneath. Boaters can move around in motorboats, explore in kayaks and canoes or jet around on the lakes.

There is something for everyone and sunbathers can enjoy one of the two public beaches on the north and south sides of the lake, as well as two private beaches. Picnickers can rent or bring their boats home and use them as public picnic areas or recreational accommodation.

The water level in the summer pool is 730 feet and in the winter pool 724 feet, and it is really a great place for nature lovers, adrenaline junkies and vacationers who want to relax. As the main purpose of Cave Run Lake is flood control, water levels are lowered to the level of the winter basin so that spring rain can fill the reservoir instead of flooding the surrounding land. So plan and pack your bags for a bigger vacation, Cave Run Lake is really the perfect destination for nature lovers, adrenaline junkies or vacationers who want to relax.
