About Lake Macatawa

When surveyors first surveyed in 1821, they were able to buy a large portion of Lake Michigan, which later became Ottawa Beach and Macatawa Resorts. Like many lakes in the northern states, the water is dark because tannins are released by the decaying vegetation. The tributaries that flow into this natural lake include the Ottawa River, Lake Huron and the Michigan River and its tributary, Lake of the Woods. Lake Mac atawa was formed by the confluence of two rivers: the Macadam River in the north and a small stream in the south.

In the early 19th century, settlers were sent to the area around Lake Macatawa by a land grab triggered by a wild banking bubble. Sawmills were built along the lake shore in 1832 and three small settlements were excavated. The settlement died out when the wild banking boom collapsed and many people left the city, but the settlement still stands as Ottawa Beach Resorts and Lake of the Woods Resort. At its peak in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Lake Macatawas, also known as Black Lake, was largely calm.

The village was unclad and unclad in the late 19th and early 20th century, with the exception of a few small settlements on the shores of the lake.

In 1846, a group of 60 Dutch Calvinists, led by the Rev. Albertus C. VanRaalte, left Rotterdam, the Netherlands, to settle in Wisconsin. After hearing about the available land in western Michigan, he decided to look into it.

On January 1, 1847, they reached the shore of the Black Lake, and soon their industrious people planned a village and built a park. The first group of settlers arrived on February 9, 1847 and began to clear the land and build their village.

After receiving government support, the men set to work, digging a canal to connect the lake directly to Lake Michigan, bypassing a small crooked drain. Lake Macatawa was also renamed the Black Lake of the Great Lakes or Lake Macatsawa to commemorate its location in the Black Lake catchment area.

In 1871, two railroad lines reached the new city of Holland, Michigan, and business flourished and many businesses grew on the shores of Lake Macatawa. Many wealthy families shopped and built two- and three-story Victorian houses connected by narrow streets and wooden promenades. Frank Baum worked at the family home on Lake Macatawa, John Jacob Astor vacationed there, and President Gerald Ford spent the summer growing up.

For the entertainment of summer guests, various activities have been arranged, including a swimming pool, a tennis court and even a horse and buggy park. The owners dug a tunnel under the dunes to bring elephants to Lake Michigan, but the tunnel still exists in Tunnel Park, which now forms the park's circle.

The fire took its toll on the two major resort hotels, while many holiday homes were demolished for the occasion. As the fire brigade could not penetrate the narrow streets, much of the property was sacrificed as burning embers were driven to the lake by the wind. Several yacht and sailing clubs have been founded in the marina on Lake Macatawa, and recreational boats sail on the lake. In their own company, the Macatsawa Cottagers have developed a large number of private yachts, as well as a yacht club and golf course.

New cottages have been built on a larger scale than the original, and many of the same families still spend their summer holidays here at Lake Macatawa. The neighborhood still exists as a residential complex, still surrounded by the same narrow streets and wooden promenades.

Despite its efforts and triumphs, Lake Macatawa remains a yachting hotspot, and even large pleasure boats can dock at the marina, although the channels around the lake have been dredged to house Great Lakes freighters for local shipping.
