About Wappapello Lake

Wappapello Lake is a Missouri gem located at the foot of the Ozark Mountains in the southeastern state. Although Missouri's largest lake attracts more attention than it deserves, more than 2.5 million people visit the 8.4-acre reservoir each year to enjoy its natural beauty and scenic views.

The lake, rich in American Indian history, is named after Shawnee Chief Wapppilese, the first chief of the Shawnees in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. The US Army Corps of Engineers built Lake W as part of its Great Missouri Water Project. Completed in 1941, the project provided flood control and hydropower to southeastern Missouri with 1.5 million cubic feet of water per day.

With a normal leisure pool of 8,400 hectares, the lake is located about 60 meters above sea level, but the capacity of the flood basin can be expanded to 23,200 hectares at an altitude of 395 feet.

To make room for melting snow and spring rain, the lake level was lowered to 5600 hectares with a maximum depth of 1,000 metres.

Lake Wappapello was built for flood control and hydropower and offers all kinds of water sports and leisure activities. Boaters and coastal fishermen have good access to the lake and there is a wide range of fish to catch in Lake West Appella. Other water sources that flow into it, such as the St. Francis River, are the Missouri River and the Lost River in the Mississippi Basin, as well as the Columbia River.

Fishermen who like to show their skills in competition can participate in one of the tournaments on the lake. Boating is also a popular activity, from exploring the many bays and lakes to pumping adrenaline such as boating and kayaking. The 1,854-acre State Park features a paved boat ramp, picnic area and two camping sites, both of which are on offer. Visitors can stay in one of the eight modern cabins with kitchen, or if you prefer to have a roof over your head, you can rent one with an eight-cabin kitchen.
