About Cochiti Lake

Cochiti Lake is located in the Pueblo de Cochiti Nation, New Mexico, USA and stretches for 7 miles along the Rio Grande River. Beautifully situated on high cliffs and steep cliffs, it has become a pleasure for recreational sports enthusiasts. Leisure activities include sailing, fishing, windsurfing and swimming, and the entire lake is within the boundaries of the Pueblos de Cochati Nation.

The Cochiti Dam is the largest dam on the Rio Grande in the United States and one of the largest dams in the world. Construction of the Cochiti Dam began in 1953, and was approved by the Flood Protection Act in 1960. Lake Cochati was created after Congress changed its permit for the Cochita Dam.

Instead of just controlling flood and sediment control, state officials decided that it would be beneficial to import water from the Colorado River Basin and be a permanent basin. Lake Cochiti was created by the decision of the US Army Corps of Engineers to create it.

The Great Dam stretches for five kilometers (three miles) and is located at the mouth of the Colorado River, south of the border between New Mexico and Arizona.

The Tetilla Peak recreation area is located on the east side of Lake Cochiti and has viewpoints on both sides of the lake and access to the Great Dam. On the west side is the "Recreation Area Cochiti," which consists of a series of hiking trails, picnic areas, a picnic area, an amphitheater and a water park.

The other area between the two recreational areas is owned by Cochiti Pueblo and is not open to the public. Day sailing and windsurfing are two popular summer activities, as Lake Cochititi is a lake of opportunities for vigilance.

Motorboats may only idle and windsurfers may only reach the lake at a maximum speed of 50 km / h. Calm, calm waters are to be expected at Cochiti Lake, but fishing is also popular there, as well as fishing and boating in the water.

During the cooler months, Lake Cochiti is filled with rainbow trout, but the other interesting fish are pike and whales. Northern pike measures more than 40 inches, while whale tracks are nearly 30 inches long. It is known for its large northern pike purses, and Cochititi is home to the largest northern pike purse in the world in the US and the largest in Mexico.

North of Lake Cochiti is the Bandelier National Monument, and Alcove House is 140 feet at the bottom of Frijoles Canyon. There are about 25 Pueblo people living there, but they can also be seen on the other side of the lake, in the city of San Luis Obispo.
In fine weather, visitors can climb to the top of Alcove House to see the interior of the house. The Bandelier National Monument also offers some of the most spectacular views of Lake Cochiti and the Pueblo people of New Mexico.

Relax in the calm waters of Lake Cochiti and escape the bustling city life for a while, enjoying your time visiting local attractions. Enjoy the fun of Lake Cochititi and relax with family and friends while escaping the hustle and bustle of New Mexico City and the bustling streets of Albuquerque, New Mexico City.
