About Lake Hickory

Lake Hickory, located on the east side of the Catawba River in North Carolina, USA, is the largest man-made reservoir in the world and the second largest in South Carolina. Lake Hickary is located at 7,000 meters above sea level and is one of only two man-made reservoirs in America. The Catawsba River rises on eastern mountain slopes and flows 225 miles through North and South Carolina, flowing into the Atlantic Ocean at the lake.

The lake was created in 1927 when Duke Energy completed construction of the first dam on the Catawba River in North Carolina, taking the name of Hickory, the nearest town.

When full, the pond reaches an altitude of 935 feet above sea level and covers an area of 5,000 square kilometers, more than twice the size of neighboring Lake Rhodhiss. It has a coastline of 109 miles, with a maximum depth of 1200 feet (400 meters) at its deepest point.

Lake Hickory, which is in Alexander County and touches Burke, Caldwell and Catawba counties, provides electricity and water to the cities of Hickory and Longview. Duke Energy continues to control and manage the reservoir and provides the majority of its water supply and water management services to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission for the city and county.

Residents with access to the lake can swim in the public bathing areas at Lake Hickory, although there are also 16 marinas.

Popular water activities on the lake include swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, canoeing and other leisure activities.

During North Carolina's hectic summer season, fishing tournaments are plentiful and popular, so consider this an opportunity for more recreational activities. The most common fish in Lake Hickory are bluefish, redfish, whitefish, blackbird and whitefish, as well as other fish species.

In 2006, Duke Energy received approval from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCEQ) for a Plan of Agreement. The plan and agreement will affect Lake Hickory, which currently ranges between 94 and 100 feet, but has a target of 96 to 97 feet.

The other plan includes other plans to meet the Lake Hickory watershed's growing water needs, such as water quality and water management. Efforts have been made to monitor and support the use of Lakeickory, including the construction of a new water treatment plant and the installation of water filtration systems. Water samples from the 1980s and 1990s have shown a significant rise in the lake's water level and a decline in sediment and other pollutant levels.

Lake Hickory borders North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia as well as Georgia, Tennessee, North Dakota and South Dakota.

About 20 miles of coastline are undeveloped and provide a natural environment in which wildlife can thrive and visitors can enjoy.

Bald eagles and ospreys can be seen in the area, but the rest of the coast is mostly dotted with private homes and docks.
