About Lake Toxaway

Toxaway is the Cherokee word for "red bird," and the lake is tucked away in the middle of the ancient Appalachian Mountains. Jennings, who had visited this wild and undeveloped region in 1890, fell in love with the splendor of the area and founded the resort company, the Toxaways Company, in 1896. In 1902, the 640-acre Lake T Oxaway was built by powerful entrepreneur E.H.Jennings and a dirt-filled dam was built on the Tox away River to create the lake. The Txaway Inn opened in 1903 and operated on its shores, and in 1902 a Tixby's restaurant opened.

The luxurious facilities and service of the inn attracted the rich and famous who arrived by train at its gates. Guests at the Inn included celebrities such as John F. Kennedy, William Randolph Hearst, George Washington and John Quincy Adams.

Visitors flocked to the lake and inn until August 13, 1916, when Mother Nature dumped heavy rain on the area, washed away the earth-brown dam and widened the current of Toxaway Falls. The entire lake was drained virtually overnight and was the first lake to be built in the Appalachians. It is located in an area that was largely untouched and wild until its discovery by the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1908.

The dam and lake were rebuilt in 1961, but of course it suffered the same fate as the original Toxaway Falls, which were eventually demolished in 1948.

Lake Toxaway is now largely surrounded by a 5,000-acre parcel of land occupied by the community and still privately owned by the Lake T Oxaway Company. The most common fish species that live in the lake are bluefish, bluefish, white-footed trout, redfish and blackbirds. They act as if they are in a lake, even though they are not, because they do not have to be.

The real estate options around the lake run into the millions, but you can rent a vacation home in Lake Toxaway to get to know the community and the lake better. There is a golf course surrounding it, and if you prefer to be graceful and cosy, a small cottage is the home that will make your dreams come true. You can have a house with pool, pool house, spa, tennis court, swimming pool and even a spa.

Lake Toxaway is surrounded by several mountains and the Nantahala National Forest, and this part of North Carolina gets about 100 inches of rainfall a year. The combination of the mountainous and humid habitat of the region makes it a perfect place for waterfalls, which is why Transylvania is also called the land of waterfalls. Many can see waterfalls and cascades from the mountains, as well as from Lake T Oxaway, but many can see them from the inside.

Lake Toxaway is also a popular destination for kayaking, canoeing, fishing and other outdoor activities. The lake offers a variety of waterfalls as well as a number of hiking trails and trails for hiking and mountain biking.

As a nature reserve, the possibilities for activities are unlimited, from kayaking, canoeing, fishing and other outdoor activities to hiking and mountain biking, camping and fishing.

In the county town of Brevard you can enjoy the beautiful theatre and performing arts and remember the days of E.H. Jennings, whom I visited when I first came to this region. You can ride on the back of a majestic horse, ride in a hot air balloon, take a helicopter or motorbike, go on a journey of discovery and feel like king or queen in an enriching experience. In nearby Asheville, you can marvel at the beautiful architecture and architecture of the old town, such as the E H Jennings Museum, which I had to visit when I first came to our region, or go hot air ballooning and burn the calves.
