About Pleasant Hill Lake

The majestic beauty of Pleasant Hill Lake is described by its sparkling blue waters, beautiful Ohio River views and beautiful waterfalls. The lake is located near Perrysville, Ohio, in Ashland and Richland counties and offers boaters 850 acres of water and unlimited horsepower. Pleasant Hill Lake was created in the 1930s by the US Army Corps of Engineers as a result of the damming of the Mohican River's Clear Fork. Today, the reservoir is the largest freshwater lake in Ohio and the second largest in America after Lake Erie.

The lake is populated year-round by boaters from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, New York, Illinois and Pennsylvania.

Numerous Indian tribes occupied the area around Pleasant Hill Lake, including the Delaware and Mohegan Indians, and the Mohican River got its name from them. The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD) manages the lake and its surroundings, as well as several other lakes and streams in the area. They lived in an area where they carved themselves into the sandstone of the nearby Lyons Waterfalls and dug sandstones from the nearby Lyons Waterfalls.

Unfortunately, the sandstone etchings were erased over time and the area was overrun by invasive species such as mosquitoes and other invasive plants and animals.

About 12,000 years ago, glacial forces altered the Mohican River to form the scenic hourglass of Clearfork Gorge, which was classified a Natural Monument by the National Park Service in 1967. During the Great Depression, the Civil Protection Corps (CCC) built more than 1,500 miles of roads, bridges, and other infrastructure in the area, and planted more than two million trees.

Today, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (DNR) manages the state's largest national park system, the Pleasants Hill Lake National Monument.

Clearfork Gorge is an hourglass of sandstone carved by the Mohican River, the largest river in the United States, and one of the most scenic in the world.

Fishing and other water activities on the lake are exceptional, and Pleasant Hill Lake has a full marina with boat rentals and accessories. The DNR in Ohio also manages the Great Lakes National Park, the largest national park in the United States.

The diverse fish populations include bluefish, perch, whitefish, trout, redfish and other species, and many anglers relax on the rocky southern shore. Visitors can enjoy one of the best family-oriented canoes and rivers in Ohio.

Mohican State Park offers a wide range of accommodation, including electric campsites, picnic areas and a variety of camping options. In the park there are 13 hiking trails, ranging from easy to difficult, as well as a number of waterfalls and other natural features. Lyon Fall Trail is an easy 2 km hike that follows Clear Fork Gorge and offers magnificent views of the waterfalls, Great Lakes and Lake Erie. The Pleasant Hill Trail follows the coast and offers magnificent views from Pleasant Hill Lake overlooking the Ohio River, the Delaware River and even the Atlantic Ocean.

The Hemlock Trail leads to a wooden bridge spanning a 1.5 km stretch of the Great Lakes and the Delaware River. Mohican State Memorial Forest offers a wide range of hiking trails, picnic areas, horse riding trails and a variety of camping options. The State Park and State Forest offer scenic views of Lake Erie, the Ohio River, Lake Michigan and even the Atlantic Ocean. The National Park offers scenic and varied terraces, as well as a number of hiking trails, bike paths and campsites.

Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District operates extensive recreational facilities in Pleasant Hill Lake Park, which is located near the dam. The park has public boats mooring at the marina, and Pleasant Hill Marina offers boat rentals, fuel and berths.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers also has its headquarters in Pleasant Hill Lake Park, and the Corps offers guided tours. The dam is one of only two the corps has built as part of a flood defense project called Morning Glory Spillway.
