About Chickamauga Lake

Chickamauga Lake is a fabulous recreational reservoir located in southeast Tennessee, 20 miles from Chattanooga. It is used for recreation, but was originally developed for flood protection and power generation. The name Chickamaugas is derived from the name of the warlike tribe that split from the Cherokee tribe and founded its main village in the area. The American state of Georgia, which covers 810 miles of coastline and has about 1.5 million inhabitants.

The popularity of Chickamauga is evidenced by the millions of annual visitors who seek the great outdoor experiences that Chickamauga has to offer. Various outdoor activities include hiking, camping, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, mountain biking, hiking and fishing.

The Chickamauga Dam and Reservoir is a New Deal project created to create a reservoir for the Tennessee River and its tributaries, the Chattahoochee River. Construction began in 1936 and was completed in 1940, and the damming of the Tennessee Hispanic River created a 59-mile reservoir. The dam is one of the largest dams in the United States with a capacity of 1.5 million cubic feet of water per second.

Today, the Chickamauga Dam and Lake are helping to expand recreational opportunities in Tennessee. The city of Chattanooga has struggled since its construction with the construction of the Chattahoochee River and its tributaries, as well as the Tennessee Hispanic River, and has its own water supply and recreation facilities.

The turbines at the Chickamauga Dam generate 160,000 kilowatts of electricity, and its turbines feed shipping traffic from the Watts Bar and Chickamaugas Reservoirs and ship traffic to the Chickamauga and Nickajack Reservations. Chick amauga Lake is also a US Army Corps of Engineers designed for navigation on the Tennessee River. It consists of a series of locks that allow barges and boats to pass through the dam. At over a mile in length, it is the longest dam in the United States and one of the largest of its kind in Europe.

Chickamauga Lake offers a wealth of outdoor recreation and a wide range of water sports including canoeing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, hiking, mountain biking and kayaking.

The reservoir is surrounded by campsites, some are built in and primitive style, others offer attractive places for boaters and campers. The banks of the reservoir are lined with marinas that offer a variety of amenities such as boat ramps, cabins, boat moorings, picnic areas and picnic tables. Marinas offer a wide range of activities such as boating, fishing, kayaking, swimming, mountain biking and camping.

Harrison Bay State Park is an 18-hole PGA course with 18-hole golf courses and a variety of other amenities including hiking, biking, fishing, swimming and camping.

Sport fishing at Chickamauga Lake offers a variety of fish species, such as redfish, redfish and whitefish. Perch and bluefin provide young anglers with plenty of fun, and wildlife viewing is enhanced by birds and other wildlife, including the rarely seen sand hill crane. The well-developed hiking trails, hiking trails, cycling, swimming and camping facilities contribute to the outdoor enjoyment.

For geocachers, there are hundreds of caches that are very easy to find, and GPS will increase your hiking enjoyment even more.
